THEY KNOW WHAT WE DON'T
Illustrations for Outright International and Edge Effect report
Project Outline
In March 2024 I was commissioned by Outright International to produce 12 illustrations and a cover for their joint report with Edge Effect on LGBTIQ+ inclusion in humanitarian action. The report was published in June and is available here.
However, originally it was scheduled for April and that meant I had to work on a very tight schedule to get all the illustrations delivered on time. Thanks to the incredible team at Outright and Edge Effect who were always responsive and able to provide feedback promptly I managed to complete the project within a month.
The report is focused on LGBTIQ+ inclusion in humanitarian response in five countries: Lebanon, Columbia, Myanmar, Nepal and Ukraine. It felt amazing to portray queer people from different cultures.
The Cover
The brief was to portray a complicated relationship between LGBTIQ+ communities and humanitarian workers. The idea I came up with is to portray a pedestrian crossing from above in a way that it would resemble a red cross - a symbol of humanitarian work. The crack on the crossing signifies that not everything is okay with the humanitarian response when it comes to LGBTIQ+ inclusion. But it's a work in progress, so that negative side is countered by two people - one humanitarian worker and one LGBTIQ+ activist - walking toward each other and extending their hands.
These are the sketches that were submitted to the clients:
The resulting cover was cropped to meet Outright International's brand guidelines:
